August 2010 Newsletter

It has come to the attention of Coffee News Staff that some of our competitors may be approaching our clients in an unethical manner to obtain your business. Although Coffee News does recommend that clients should advertise in various media outlets, this competitor has concerned us because of their approach.

A client recently received a fax from a company, with their EXACT Coffee News ad placed in the proofing area. The fax has been designed as an invoice and is worded so vaguely that it is difficult to understand who may have made the order for the ad. The order states that if no changes are made the ad will run as is. The end result is that the ad that Coffee News has designed, and paid to design, runs, without any authorization from the client, and then the competitor will try to collect on the cost of the ad from the client.

We feel that this is a very deceitful sales practice. It also infringes the Copyright that Coffee News has as a franchise that is noted in the terms and conditions of your insertion order. Coffee News is in no manner associated with this company.

Please be wary of such sales techniques as we do not wish to be associated with this form of sales method, nor wish our clients to fall prey to such questionable practices.

Back-to-School Marketing

Can you believe that summer holidays are half over? In a month’s time kids will be packing their lunches and waiting for the school bus. So how does this affect your small business?

Back-to-school season is one of the biggest shopping seasons of the year and you don’t want to miss out on it! Even if you’re not selling school supplies you can still attract the back-to-school frenzy to your business!

Create a link to the back-to-school buzz. For example: hair dressers can offer a ‘picture day’ special, a nutritionist can offer information on making healthy lunches, or an automotive repair shop can target University students with a “smooth starts” student maintenance and tune up package.

If the end of summer means a slow-down in your business consider having a ‘last chance’ sale. If you sell RV’s you can market “get the family out on a camping trip before it’s too late!” A museum or activity centre might offer discounts on tours while holidays last or a water sports company might have an “end-of-summer blow out sale”.

Don’t forget that with the children back in school some parents could have more time on their hands to take advantage of your products or services. Spas and massage therapists can offer discounts on “now that they’re in school” appointments, restaurants can have new fall menus for lunch time patrons or community centers could offer special workshops during school hours.

Remember, that when parents are getting ready to send their children to school they are also preparing to spend some money. By giving your business marketing a back-to-school twist, you could see profits from some of that spending. If you’re planning a back-to-school special, make sure you include it in your advertising in Coffee News!

 Alberta Underwater...

You’ve heard of scuba diving in the tropics…but here in Alberta!?

“We have very active divers in Alberta,” said Angie Garred of The Dive Outfitters, Edmonton.  “If you go to the lakes in Jasper or Banff you’ll see divers all over the place!”

Most Albertans get their training here in the prairies before embarking on an underwater adventure at a more likely scuba diving location, like Mexico or Hawaii.

The Dive Outfitters offer training and courses for snorkeling and scuba diving.  The first half of the training is completed in a local swimming pool before the students start their “open water training” on a lake or the ocean.

“Most people start the course here and finish it when they’re on holidays,” shared Garred.  “We refer them to a shop or instructor wherever they’re going and send them off with a letter saying they have to complete the other half.”  Garred said this was a very common practice and students can finish their dive training almost anywhere in the world.

For those who plan to stick to Alberta waters they can expect activities like underwater poker or underwater pumpkin carving.  Some Edmonton divers even head out to Twin Lake s for a “Wednesday Quickie” dive after work!

There’s a whole other underwater world out there.  For more information visit www.albertaunderwatercouncil.com
